The first flag-raising ceremony of this semester was held at SUIS Gubei this week. Our Principal, Mr Walsh, and Chinese Principal, Mr Liu, delivered speeches during the ceremony.

We have recently experienced a highly memorable Mid-Autumn Festival, as Typhoon Bebinca, bearing an endearing name, made landfall in Lin Gang with a formidable strength of 14 on the Beaufort scale. This marked the most powerful typhoon to directly impact Shanghai since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Being an immensely populous city in China, with a population exceeding 27 million individuals, Shanghai faces significant challenges due to its high population density, thereby exerting immense pressure on urban security.
我们刚刚度过了一个非常难忘的中秋，台风贝碧嘉带着可爱的名字，却以登陆临港时14级的强度，成为1949年建国以来直击上海的最强台风。上海作为中国的超大型城市，拥有2700多万的居民，人员密度很大，所以城市保障压力极大。
For more than 10 hours during the typhoon, over 2,500 rescue teams and 50,000 rescue personnel from Shanghai, as well as over 10,000 firefighters, promptly responded to various emergencies including power and communication failures, high-rise falling objects, and urban flooding. The Shanghai police implemented the highest level of social security measures, handling over 10,000 emergency calls. After the typhoon, over 10,000 trees were uprooted in the city, and the city’s greening and sanitation departments began clearing them immediately after the typhoon had left Shanghai, ensuring that the city’s roads were restored to normal. Behind all these efforts lies the responsibility and dedication of urban builders.
在台风肆虐的十多个小时里，上海市2500余支抢险队伍、5万余名抢险人员、上万名消防救援指战员紧急处理了电网和通讯故障、高空坠物、城市内涝等各类险情。上海警方，启动了最高等级的社会面防控，处理110求助一万多起。台风后，全市倒伏树木一万多株，绿化和环卫部门在台风刚刚离开上海的时候，就开始清理，保证城市道路恢复畅通。在这一切数字的背后，是城市建设者的职责与坚守。
