Delegates from various SUIS Campuses descend upon Gubei for a very successful MUN conference
2017 SMUNC
Secretary-General
Vickie Liu
As far I know, this year is the first year that SMUNC opens to Juniors like me. This is the start of my MUN journey and I have to say this MUN weekend is a gorgeous experience to improve on both my English speaking and knowledge of the committee topics.
Before the MUN weekend, our committee had two meetings held by the Secretary-General Vickie Liu from Grade 11 and Press Corp Secretary-General Kathryn Yang who is also the chair of our committee. Before the MUN weekend, we were asked to hand in a Position Paper which needed to include the problems our countries are facing using data from reliable websites or books and suggest solutions for the situation. Example from me, I am the delegate of Zimbabwe, I did a lot of research before building up my position paper. I explained how the deficit midwives and medical care affected the maternal mortality and gave a clear plan about how to educate the women on the importance of maternal health.
The MUN weekend started with Vickie proposing a motion for 2017 SMUNC to start. All the delegates got into their committees. For me is the World Health Organization talking about the topic Maternal Health. Delegates came upwith lots of ideas to discuss such as Legalization of Abortion and How Poverty affect Maternal Mortality. We raised our placards which has our country on it and waited for our chair to add us to the speaker’s list. When it was my turn, I gave a little speech about the topic to all the delegates. I was glad to express my ideas with the honorable chair and my fellow delegates.
Later on, we formed up blocks that we worked together for our Working Paper and Draft Resolution. They are basically the same thing but with more detailed description of solutions in the Draft Resolution than it is in the Working Paper. We formed up blocks with people from different grades and even different campuses as it is a brilliant opportunity to make friends and especially communicate with others and have a mixture of all kinds of ideas from different perspectives. We worked in blocks during small breaks and lunch times fighting towards the deadline which also requires our time management skills.
At last our committee came up with three Draft Resolutions and we had to vote on one as our final solution to this topic. We voted on the most appropriate one and the motion passed. Maternal Health problems that we are working for more than two days were solved.
