The bustling regional round of World Scholar’s Cup Shanghai has reached its splendid conclusion. There were 49 SUIS-GuBei students who attended the Shanghai Round on April 14th and 15th in Shanghai Pinghe School. This year, the theme of the competition is “An Entangled World”. Scholars had the chance to learn knowledge beyond the textbooks, such as Diplomatic History, the Science of Memory, Human Relationships, Voices of the Inseparable and Black Markets. In addition, they got the chance to dauntlessly deal with arts and music regarding “Braving Distance” and so much more. Scholars competed in 4 different events: Debating, Scholar’s Challenge, Collaborative Writing and Scholar’s Bowl. We achieved excellent results with 9 trophies and more than 200 medals. May the students of SUIS create wonders once again in Kuala Lumpur Global Round of 2018, we will see you again.

This year has been my very first year doing World Scholar’s cup. It has been an enthralling experience! I have put my communication, negotiating, writing and researching skills through four fun and educative events. Personally, my favorite event is the scholar’s bowl it involves working with your teammates and a clicker. When the bowl started, I was really nervous. However, the anxiety disappeared very quickly. We first answered some really fun practice questions and we celebrate as a team when we got a question correct. When we moved onto the actual questions, I didn’t even feel scared. Even better, half way through, we got our own alpacas. This made the Scholar’s Bowl a really enjoyable event. World Scholar’s Cup has been a truly unique occasion in both academic and pleasure. I hope to gain more knowledge, friends and experiences in the Global Round in Kuala Lumpur!

This was the first time I joined the World Scholar’s Cup and it was a marvelous experience for me. The team debate and the scholar’s show were the two most intriguing activities. We all had an assigned room for our debates, we debated against different scholars from a huge variety of schools. We received feedbacks from scholars and we also offered some advices for them. This made all of us learn a lot because these scholars found where we could improve on and we acknowledged how to make our speech more convincing and persuasive. I also realized the importance of teamwork through this particular activity, we needed to provide our fellow teammates with ideas and inspire them with thoughts of our own, we also used our time wisely during the preparation sessions to ensure that all points were generated and discussed before debating. I performed the piece “Meditation” during the scholar’s show, I felt the hearty encouragements and support from all the scholars. After I heard all the talented scholars perform, I was utterly amazed by how creative and enthusiastic they were. Everyone has something that they are good at, and this is what makes them special.

There is no doubt that the competition makes us nervous; however, it gave us something to fight for at the same time, and we harvested happiness from it. For infinite times we put up our hangtags, held tight the soft alpaca, made our entrance into the debate rooms, and for infinite thoughts and struggles we had facing the 120 multiple choice challenges, we earned infinite times of cheers and applauses. Every time, the competition brings us a brand-new experience; every time, the competition presents us with the new opportunities to know new scholar, new knowledge, and make new discoveries.
