On January 16, 2025, our campus, SUIS Gubei, proudly hosted its inaugural animal-assisted therapy workshop, “Animal Heal.” The event was both vibrant and significant, marking a memorable occasion for our community.
We were honored to invite Mr Wu Qi, an experienced animal trainer, and his team from the Wu Qi Studio, along with five adorable therapy dogs, to introduce the PFH (Paws for Heal) Therapy Dog Project. The event featured both educational lectures on animal therapy and interactive dog training sessions.
For this event, we had an impressive turnout with over 80 registrations from students and staff, all eager to express their affection and enthusiasm for animals. Attendees had the unique opportunity to engage with the therapy dogs and acquire various practical dog training techniques. Moreover, the gentle therapy dogs brought comfort and a therapeutic presence to everyone present with their silent companionship and loving gazes. This event further strengthened the bond between our school community and animals, allowing us to experience the unconditional love and care of animals while also learning to treat them with love and respect.
The event was originally planned to run for one hour. However, due to the overwhelming enthusiasm from the participants, it was extended to two and a half hours. We are truly grateful for the success of this event on our campus, which aligns with our commitment to promoting philanthropy and animal welfare. We look forward to keeping this enthusiasm alive within our school and would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Ms. Li for her diligent organization, the prefect team for their invaluable support, and especially to Mr Wu Qi along with his team for bringing us such a meaningful and inspiring event!
Through this event, I’ve learned some useful ways to train dogs, which really helps me a lot as I also have a pet dog. Besides, I think the idea that “stray dogs are just misplaced resources” is quite a novel one for us. It offers us a new perspective to understand how stray animals can be adopted and contribute to society through animal shelters and training organizations or institutions, and helps us make better plans in this regard.
Humans naturally tend to see themselves as superior to other animals. A lot of us think that we are the only ones capable of having culture, experiencing love, and possessing intelligence. On Thursday, the animal therapy truly opened my eyes to how wrong that statement was. I had always found the saying “dogs are a man’s best friend” kind of corny. But when I saw how, after entertaining us, the dogs would frantically run back to their owners, it was really heartwarming. Another thing I noticed was that the dogs were able to associate human commands with actions, whereas humans are often unable to do the same with dogs. This demonstrates a high level of intelligence. In conclusion, the animal therapy helped me realize that dogs are not inferior to humans and are truly loyal, smart, and loving companions.
Attending the charity event was an enlightening experience that broadened my understanding of the world of animal therapy. The spokesperson touched me with his genuine passion for animals, and his sheer dedication to his craft was truly awe-inspiring. As he shared his life story and the path that led him to become a dog trainer, he melted the hearts of everyone present with a short performance featuring his tiny service dog, Yoda. He reminded everyone that we all have the opportunity to give back to the community in our own unique ways and demonstrated how he had accomplished this through his love for animals. After the talk, everyone gathered around the therapy dogs and eagerly interacted with them, marking the end of a truly unforgettable experience. Despite the event’s short duration, it was truly amazing. I’m grateful that the school and the charity prefects were able to organize such an exciting event.
